John E. Norton, the Managing Partner of the Law Firm of Norton and Brusss, LLC, Attorneys at Law, has been an active trial lawyer for over 35 years. He has tried cases in the state and federal courts throughout Chicago, the collar counties and northern Illinois. He has litigated thousands of cases in the areas of professional negligence, personal injury and civil rights at both the trial and appellate levels including the Supreme Court of Illinois and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

In recognition of John’s experience and expertise as a trial lawyer, he has been elected to membership in the Society of Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) which are invitation-only bodies comprised of the most experienced and renowned trial lawyers in the country.

Long involved in continuing professional education from the perspective of an author and lecturer, he has contributed to practice handbooks and lectured to attorneys under the auspices of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education.  As well, he has presented lectures and continuing education programs before local and national medical, nursing and hospital associations on the subject of medical malpractice.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1971, and graduated from the DePaul University College of Law in 1975. In 2005 he obtained a Certificate in Mediation Skills from Northwestern University, and is a court-certified and appointed mediator and arbitrator in DuPage County and Kane County, Illinois.

His current practice involves complex litigation and catastrophic injury cases which he handles from both our Chicago and Wheaton offices. In addition to his busy and varied practice, John has been active in the civic and professional communities of the greater Chicagoland area. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the DuPage County Bar Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

Since 2012 he has been appointed as a Special Master in Discovery by the Judges of the Circuit Court of the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit, DuPage County Illinois. In this capacity he has assisted the Judges of the Divorce Division as an appointed Master, or officer of the Court, in supervising discovery matters in the Division, which is the fact-development stage of litigation. As a court-appointed Special Master he monitors and supervises the conduct of the attorneys and litigants in the Division and reports to the Judges of the Division, making recommendations concerning supervisory actions to be taken by the Court as appropriate in those cases to which he is assigned.

The Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois appointed John to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions in Civil Cases in 2015, where he continues to serve as one of twenty-three members of the Committee, comprised of judges, attorneys and law professors from across the State of Illinois, who draft, revise and amend the Illinois Pattern Jury Instructions ( IPI ), which are required by law to be used in all civil jury trials conducted in Illinois. These instructions set forth and define the law of the State of Illinois to be applied by all civil juries to the cases which they decide in Illinois courts.

Most recently, John was awarded the Lifetime Achievement selection to America's Top 100 Attorneys, which is by invitation only and is reserved to identify the nation's most exceptional attorneys whose accomplishments and impact on the legal profession merit a Lifetime Achievement award.

John and his wife, Ellen, are the parents of four children and reside in Downers Grove, Illinois.
